Camnago Volta—known as Camnago San Martino until 1863, it was an independent municipality until 1943 when it was incorporated into Como—is located 3 kilometers and 234 meters from the city center, as indicated by a plaque on the wall in Via della Pila. It is the site of the scientist’s favorite villa, along with other properties including a mill, and where he chose to be buried. In Piazzale Don Serafino Pozzetti, just above the parish church of Santa Cecilia, there is a yellow house on the left-hand side, which was bought back in the 20th century by the Volta family to maintain their connection with the place where they had been present since 1546. This is where the Passeggiata Voltiana, also known as the “tram route,” begins. In fact, the Como-Erba-Lecco railway line, which ran from 1912 to 1955, passed through these woods along the Cosia stream. Since 2002, when the association La Città Possibile rebuilt the Ponte dei Bottini bridge halfway along the route connecting Camnago with Solzago in the municipality of Tavernerio, the trail has become a pleasant walk through the countryside, just under two kilometers long. Since 2022, the route has also taken on literary significance thanks to two wooden lecterns with stories for children and a small house for exchanging books, placed there by the Sentiero dei Sogni association.
